As a bit of an Apple fanboy, that was hugely disappointing. It is basically a big iPod Touch, sounds like a sanitary towel, and looks cumbersome to use – but more importantly there is no multitasking. On what is supposed to be the ‘new laptop’, you can only run one app at a time. You’d think that with that extra processing power you’d at least be able to type a word document while watching something in another window. But no.

Read the full details of the device here.

I agree more than wholeheartedly. We have had an app stuck in Apple’s review process for over a month with no feedback, no updates, no acknowledgement of the multiple queries we have submitted… it’s shambolic customer service and hugely demotivating for ambitious developers trying to do something new. Which I guess is part of the problem – if you produce a standard, staid app that replicates functionality of hundreds already available you’ll be fine – it’s the interesting, ground-breaking ones that are being stymied.

Apple have announced changes to the way music will be sold through their iTunes store; it will now be DRM free, and priced on a sliding scale, 59p, 77p, and 99p.

The songs will also have better audio quality.

This opens them up to direct competition from other MP3 manufacturers; users can now buy music through the iTunes store and use it on their Creative/Sony/name-a-brand MP3 player.

This has two major ramifications for Apple – users wedded to iTunes could move away from iPods, costing Apple on the hardware side; or users of other MP3 players will begin to use the iTunes store and increase Apple’s share of the download market.

At face value, there seems more to be gained from opening the store – there are millions of users who will potentially download millions of tracks to their native players. Some may move away from iPods to other options, but Apple are effectively backing themselves to have the best hardware.
